Admiral Internet Backbone

Top of Page

The backbone infrastructure is 'Tier 1' and is designed for business connectivity , not for dial up modem access. It is provided by IDT, the only Internet Service Provider that will guarantee you two hops to a network access point (nap). Recently, The Wall Street Journal's Smart Money Magazine rated IDT's network reliability number one. Here's why:

Backbone Overview

The fully redundant clear channel T3 backbone is unique from other providers in that we make heavy use of telecom switching technologies that route data traffic with 1/1000th the latency of a typical router. The core of our network builds its redundancy over the Northern Telecom Magellan Passport, a popular high-end voice/data/video backbone switch used heavily in voice and data technologies worldwide. Our clear channel DS3s are switched, via these units, and provide a stable, secure platform for our Cisco routing equipment. Should any one of our National DS3s fail, data will be switched through a backup fault tolerant path that operates below the IP layer to avoid the large overhead involved in recalculating routed paths. This allows us to recover within milliseconds; it takes our competitors minutes. The network architecture is based on a two hop strategy: Any network node is a maximum of two hops from an Internet meet point. This unique design minimizes packet loss and delay, and guarantees the best possible performance. This topology is unique among major ISP's.

Backbone Peering and Connectivity

We currently peer in four major public Internet meet points, (Mae-East, Mae-West, Ameritech NAP, and Sprint NAP). It is here that IDT hands off traffic to and from other large ISPs, such as BBN Planet, Netcom, PSI, and UUNet plus 60 regional ISPs who seek peering arrangements. In addition to draining traffic at public exchanges, we also have private peering setup directly with UUNet, BBN Planet, and PSI Inc. to provide high-quality, stable traffic flow to avoid congested locations.

Monitoring

We monitor activities on our backbone with several tools, available to all of our Network Operations Personnel. These tools are a combination of commercially available and proprietary applications developed by Cabletron and our own development staff. Cabletron Spectrum's Enterprise Management architecture allows us to monitor from more than one server allowing for redundant coverage. We leverage these applications to provide us with snapshots of our network every 15 seconds. It monitors overall network stability, bandwidth utilization, as well as to provide our customers with value-added statistical reports. This allows us to identify "hot-spots" on the network before they develop into problems, thus insuring network integrity. Our Network Operations Center monitors the network and it's connectivity 24 hours a day/7 days a week/365 days a year.

Security

Network security is maintained behind Network Systems Security Firewalls, which are typically used in government security applications such as The Department of Defense. Additionally, we make use of Security Dynamic's SecurID authentication, and Datafellow's SSH encryption products which utilize RSA, Triple-DES, and IDEA authentication and encryption algorithms. All network monitoring, configuration, and customer provisioning is done on secure LANs to protect sensitive customer and network information.

Support

You will be assigned your own personal Customer Service Representative (CSR). Your CSR is available to help with: billing, domain name services, ip issues, and working with your local telco provider. Additionally, IDT provides you with your own personal Technical Support Representative (TSR). Your TSR is there to support you with: connection problems, equipment difficulties, routing issues and is capable of working you through every situation which may arise. Emergency technical support is available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

Firewall Options

IDT offers top-flight security options endorsed by The Department of Defense and other government agencies. These security measures can keep unwanted intruders out of your private networks. IDT's network engineers can customize a firewall solution to meet your specific needs.

Virtual Private Networks (VPN)

Corporations dispersed across two or more locations can form a VPN over the Internet. This is an extremely cost-effective and very secure method for extending a corporate LAN over a geographically diverse area.
